Gunnery Sergeant Thomas J. Sullivan, USMC
Gunnery Sergeant Thomas J. Sullivan of Springfield, Massachusetts, was a proud Marine whose life was defined by courage, dedication, and service to his country. On July 16, 2015, he was tragically killed during a terrorist attack on military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sullivan was one of five service members who lost their lives in the attack, which targeted both a Navy Reserve Center and a Marine Corps recruiting center. His bravery and commitment to others shone in his final moments, where he saved the lives of 15 people before returning to aid others, ultimately sacrificing his own life.
Sullivan’s heroism is remembered as a testament to the values of the Marine Corps—honor, courage, and commitment.
